Giro Ionos The Cycling Helmet of Champions!

Giro Ionos Cycling Helmets

Whether you are cycling off-road, on-road or otherwise, the most important piece of equipment after your bike, is your cycling helmet. It protects one of the most important parts of your body - your head. In many cases, it is a life-saver, so It is extremely important to choose the correct one.

When cycling helmets first came out, they were strange, uncomfortable, nerdy-looking things that sat on top of your head like a mushroom. Many people didn’t like wearing them simply because they looked weird. That all changed in 1985, when a man called Jim Gentes started his Giro company, and began creating cycling helmets that were both sturdy in design, and yet looked great to wear.

Giro now produces helmets for all types of sporting folk - cyclists, skiers and snowboarders - but the one that we will be looking at here is the Giro Ionos. These particular helmets are the choice of champions - 7-times Tour de France winner, Lance Armstrong and Alberto Contador both wear Giro Ionos helmets.

Construction

Giro uses an in-mold sub-frame EPS liner, together with a polycarbonate shell, to create the most stylish and technologically advanced cycling helmet they have ever produced.

Giro Ionos Cycling HelmetIt provides more ventilation than any other helmet - it has 21 large, reinforced vents. In fact, these are the largest vents that have ever been moulded into a helmet. These vents let cool air circulate freely around your head, and also lets the warm, stale air out. It is absolutely ideal for those strenuous rides over rough terrain. As a little bonus, you also get a helmet liner for those chilly winter days.
The in-mold composite sub-frame (meaning it has carbon fibre reinforcements running through it) provides the strength around these vents. The vents create a cooling system that Giro calls Wind Tunnel. The Ionos has 15% more ventilation than the Atmos. The composites used in the sub frame ensures that the Ionos meets the most stringent safety standards.

Another great little feature of this helmet is the X-Static fabric pads that are woven with pure silver fibres. These pads stop the growth of micro organisms, which means it prevents bad odour - Giro says that they kill 100% of bacteria. You can also wash these pads in your washing machine.

Giro has also inserted two Dual Pods that firmly grasp the back of your head, while at the same time comfortably cradling the occipital lobe.

ROC LOC 5

The Ionos also uses the new ROC LOC 5 fitting system, which Giro has introduced after more than 2 years of development. This groundbreaking system ensures that the wearer has the ultimate level of comfort, stability and adjustability.

Giro ROC LOC 5 SystemThe ROC LOC 5 system allows you to simply dial the ratcheting, micro-dial (about 18mm in diameter) to adjust both the fit tension and also the vertical fit - and this can all be done with just one hand, even when cycling! The audible click that ROC LOC 5 produces lets you know you’re turning it. You can simply, and easily, twist it one way for a tighter feel when you are charging over rough ground, and twist it the other way to ease it off when riding over flatter ground. There are three different vertical fits with a total range of 15mm.The ROC LOC 5 system is also nearly 40% lighter than the previous ROC LOC 4 system.

One other nice little feature of ROC LOC 5 is that the helmet straps thread through the arms of the ROC LOC system, meaning that they are always close by your head.

Sizes

The helmet comes in three sizes that will fit an adult head perfectly and, if you need to give it to an 10-year old, just twist the dial with a single hand and, presto, it will fit perfectly!

The Giro Ionos is certainly not the cheapest helmet out there - it is actually a tad expensive - but the quality, protection and great look that you get from the Ionos, certainly makes it well worth the money.

To sum up, the Giro Ionos is a top-quality cycling helmet, offering superb ventilation and protection - which will cost you a bit more in terms of cash but, when your head hits the ground, cash won’t be a consideration, and you can always be certain that the Giro Ionos will protect that precious head of yours!
